Beneath the Bluestone

Start here — Melbourne, layer by layer.

If you only walk one Story Walk in Melbourne, walk this one. Beneath the Bluestone is a journey through the layers of a city that has been built, again and again, on top of itself.

We begin on the banks of Birrarung — the river misnamed the Yarra — on the unceded Country of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung, where Kulin people have gathered, traded and lived for tens of thousands of years. We cross into the surveyor's grid Robert Hoddle pegged out in 1837, follow the gold that turned a tent town into one of the richest cities on earth in a single decade, and walk into Little Lon — the demolished tenement quarter where the city's Chinese, Irish, Lebanese, Jewish and Italian arrivals lived stacked twelve to a room, and whose buried floors archaeologists still lift up from beneath the public service towers above.

We pass the Shrine, the boom-era banks, the Federation parliament that ran a nation from Spring Street for twenty-six years, and the laneways where Greek Lonsdale, Vietnamese Richmond and the next wave of arrivals keep rewriting what Melbourne sounds like. We finish high above the river with the city spread out below — not as a history lesson, but as an invitation: every generation adds another layer, and yours is already underway.

This is the walk that teaches you how to read Melbourne. Every other Story Walk — After Dark, Lost Melbourne, First Peoples, Ghost Signs, Pentridge & Beyond — sits more deeply once you've taken this one.

This is the walk we send people on first, and we want it to keep getting better. If you can correct a date, deepen a story, or point us at a voice we should be listening to more carefully — especially Wurundjeri and other First Peoples voices on the opening stops — please get in touch.
