The Heidelberg School
Streeton, Roberts, Conder and the artists' camp where Australia first painted itself.
In the summer of 1888–89, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder pitched a camp on the slopes of Mount Eagle and painted what they saw — gold grass, blue distance, the Yarra Valley dissolving into heat. The 9 by 5 Impression Exhibition followed. Australian art changed direction. A walk across the actual hills, with the actual paintings in your hand, finding the exact slopes Streeton stood on to paint Golden Summer.
