Pentridge & Beyond

The bluestone walls, the bodies exhumed, and the apartments living on the prison's ghost.

For 140 years Pentridge loomed over north Melbourne — H Division, the hanging beam, Ronald Ryan's last walk, Ned Kelly's bones moved and moved again. The walls are still there. So are the watchtowers. But now there are balconies cut into them and a Woolworths where the exercise yard used to be. A walk through what the prison did to the suburb, and what the suburb is doing back.
